Saturday Morning Syncretism

I can’t claim to be a fan of the Moorish Orthodox Church, mainly due to their support of pederast Hakim Bey (when I was a Muslim, my laundry list of grievances was a bit longer). However, I find this portrait truly remarkable. It’s Rumi, but done in a style that is almost always used for Eastern Orthodox icons. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it before. So, credit where it’s due.

Wow, that is incredible. Yes, give credit where credit is due.

I am a huge lover of iconography, which I am sure is haraam. I have loved it since I was a kid. Can’t get enough of the stuff.

This pic is going in my archives for sure. Where did you find it?!

It’s from the Moorish Orthodox Church website.

I heard and apocryphal tale once that Muhammad destroyed the idols of the kaaba but did not destroy an orthodox icon of Mary and Jesus that was there, out of respect for them. Most Islamic scholars would, I’m sure, say iconography is haraam, but realistically I don’t put much stock in Islamic scholarship. To me idolatry is all about one’s approach to something; a word, a stone, a mental conception, any of that could be an idol; a sculpture, a painting, or a photograph of a living being could likewise be appreciated for exactly what it is and nothing more.
